Art Shows

09 October 2011

The Wissahickon School District annual art show is the defining activity of the school year for the art teachers and students. There are many students participating for their twelfth year. The show takes place in May. It is a K-12 event that fills a two story gymnasium and is a wonder to behold. We have the high school work judged and since I became the coordinator of the event I've been able to recruit judges of a particular profile. I look for judges who are familiar with the nature of high school art and who share a passion for contemporary art education pedagogy. I have been incredibly fortunate to have some of my art education "heroes" join us as adjudicators. Karen Keifer-Boyd, Wanda Knight, Patricia Amburgy, Tina Thompson, Mary Ann Stankiewicz, Charles Garoian, Marilyn Stewart, John Howell-White, Martin Rayala, Jan Norman, Bob Sweeney, Aileen Wilson, Margaret Walker, Ryan Patton, Jordan Crosby and Lynne Horoshak (to name a few) have graced us with their enthusiastic support. We have also included art museum educators from the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Woodmere Art Museum as well as admissions representatives from the School of the Museum of fine Arts (Boston), the San Francisco Art Institute, the Kansas City Art Institute, University of the Arts, Tyler and the Delaware College of Art and Design. These wonderful people have provided us with valuable feedback, enhanced the credibility of the event and they have become enthusiastic advocates of the Wissahickon High School art program at the local and national level.

One thing I could do better is to collect more archival material. I'm definitely working on it and I greatly appreciate the help of David Toia, Dina Campagna, Jess Brasch and others who have helped compile and edit video and photographic material. I would like to also point out that the Wissahickon District Art Show was originally envisioned and started by Cheri Parsons, former art teacher and district supervisor for art and music. I would like to thank her as we head toward our 25th annual district art show. It amazes me to think of 25 years of student learning in the arts filling that two story gymnasium...

2009

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to our 2009 judges. We were very fortunate to have (clockwise from top left) Charles Garoian (Penn State), Aileen Wilson (Pratt), Bob Sweeny (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) and Ryan Patton (Penn State) honor us as judges of high school work for our show.
