I was born in Fairbanks, Alaska, to a musician in the U.S. Air Force and a lab technician who later became a middle school librarian. I lived in a lot of places and attended a lot of schools. I taught in San Antonio, TX, for seven years and I’ve been teaching in Ambler, PA, for nine years. In between I spent 11 years traveling the country as an Admissions Counselor for the Kansas City Art Institute, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), the San Francisco Art Institute, and the School of Visual Arts (NYC). In addition, I have spent 12 years as an Art & Design examiner for the International Baccalaureate Organization.

I have been fortunate to visit some of the finest high school art programs in the country and work with the most exciting students and teachers on the planet. My views are most informed by my students, my reading and my years in art school admissions.

I am a proud member of the National Art Education Association, PA Art Education Association. and the Caucus on Social Theory & Art Education. There is nothing more interesting to me than art education and studying visual culture. My teaching philosophy has evolved significantly over the years. I don't really see myself as an art teacher any longer. Working with students has become conceptual art for me. To borrow from Joseph Beuys (1969), To be a teacher is my greatest work of art. The rest is the waste product, a demonstration... . Teaching is not a goal of mine, student learning is; and learning isn't always immediately observable or measurable. I am influenced by Michael Asher when I say that I am an author of situations. I strive to author situations that lead to discovery and life experience for students. That is where I envision their learning and my success, or lack thereof to reside. A student told me recently that one of my courses led her to learn about herself and the next course, the world. I certainly didn't teach her anything, but she learned quite a bit.

My personal studio activities have shifted substantially as well. At some point my art making ceased to be about and/or of something. Now it is a habitual activity of process and collection. That is all. I don't know much and I enjoy not knowing. Questions are far more inspiring than answers.

I am indebted to my patient wife and two rambunctious sons, my students and my friend Ian Williams. I’m very fortunate!
